Richard Martin aka Merlyn Martin started DJing in 1985. Influenced by the DJ’s and music he heard at the popular teen clubs and back yard parties in LA at the time. Intrigued by the mixing together of such diverse artist and music styles such as Depeche Mode, Egyptian Lover, New Order, and Africa Bambata, Cover Girls, Expose, LL Cool J Etc.
Richard started DJing the backyard & hall parties, teen clubs, and eventually the 18+ & 21+ nightclubs in the L.A. area. In 1993 Richard started Djing under the moniker of DJ Merlyn playing the Techno, Trance, and Progressive House sounds coming out of Detroit and Europe at after-hour clubs and rave style one off events.
In 1995 DJ Merlyn moved to San Diego quickly gained local notoriety for playing a more progressive underground sound. Eventually becoming one of three resident DJ’s at the popular after-hour club Romperoom, and Genesis. In 1998 DJ Merlyn became a rotating resident at the infamous Los Angeles after-hour club Insomnia. DJ Merlyn has played at club and events from New York to Seattle and everywhere in between.
DJ Merlyn is known for his progressive mixing style which has been show cased on four themed professionally produced promotional tapes Blue, Red, White, Rain, and two professionally produced promotional compact disc’s Moon, and Elements Earth. Thousands of promotional tapes and CD’s have been giving out for free at clubs and events from New York to Seattle and everywhere in between.
In 2003 DJ Merlyn started the short-lived Techno/House dance label Allied Recordings featuring such releases such as Thee-O & Andy Hughes “Rumbling Bass” remixed by Frankie Bones, and Torin Schmitt’s “Wicked November” remixed by Angel Alanis.
In 2004 DJ Merlyn started DJing and now producing and co-producing original music under the moniker of Merlyn Martin. Staying true to spreading the most underground sounds Merlyn Martin has started the Sub-Division Podcast featuring a more Progressive Techno sound.
Over the years Merlyn Martin has played along side such artist DJ’s as Frankie Bones, DJ Pierre, Derrick May, Juan Atkins, Terry Mullen, DJ Dan, Mistress Barbara, Christian Smith & John Selway, Tim Taylor, Doc Martin, Christopher Lawrence, DJ Taylor, Thee-O, Dave Randall, Barry Weaver, Sandra Collins, BT, Rabbit in The Moon, and many, many more.
