Why we listen to electronica? - 2006/06/03 12:25This may seem like a stupid question to all you techno/house/D&B lovers, but what does electronica leave you with that no other music does? I ask because recently alot of people seem to be anti-techno, saying that it`s boring or uninteresting. In what once seemed like a growing massive of techno lovers, I seem to be a loner again. I personally love the music, because of the way it stretches ones thought perception over a much time frame, and from personal experience listening to techno inspires creativity and general expansion of the mind, while listening to say hip hop really makes one feel unmotivated and just wallow in ones own problems. I feel that`s the biggest separation between commercial music and electronica. Commercial music seems like it`s made for people with insecurities who want music to bring comfort to those insecurities, while electronica(for the most part) is made for people who want something more from life, they want to constantly explore and expand their minds and thought process in search of that motivation and creative spark that will take their lives to next step. The above is all fine and good, but recently there has been anti-techno movenment by mainstream artists like eminem ("it`s over, nobody listen to techno") ragging on techno, but all I can say to that is, who is your shepherd? What you do people think of all this?
Re:Why we listen to electronica? - 2006/06/03 17:02electronic music creates an atmosphere, creates a mood.. this is one of its best properties. it can be emotional without saying one word. sometimes you just feel so in tune with the mood of the track its great. my experience anyway..
Re:Why we listen to electronica? - 2006/06/03 18:25When it comes down to it, people listen to the music that they like, for whatever reasons...it creates a mood...helps relieve stress...meshes well with their brainwaves...what have you. i`ve found in trying to explain my listening tastes to friends i have that dont listen to EDM, i tell them that "it`s a different kind of listening." when i put on a pink floyd or a hum or a jane`s addiction album, it`s much more active listening. the lyrics change, the songs change quicker, there`s often much more going on. in electronic, at least the styles i listen to, it is repetitive for the most part with the basic rhythm, with melodic changes and hooks and "piano rolls" on occasion. electronic is a different kind of listening. you`re supposed to loose yourself in it, not be as active with it as you might be with your generic rock songs. it flows more, doesnt have as much hard edged definition as rock tracks. i think that`s why i enjoy it, it`s a different kind of music listening. there has been a fusion of the 2 in the last several years, with acts like crystal method, prodigy, chemical brothers, and fatboy slim bridging the gap. making active listening songs using normally electronica instruments. case in point: look at the Dirty Vegas track "Days Go By." i`m sure we`ve all seen the Eclipse commericals and seen the video on MTV. it`s more accesible to the normal pop listeners since it has more changing lyrics, it`s not as long, and has more of a feel of a rock song than your basic danceable deep progressive track (which it has been remixed into). (sorry)
Re:Why we listen to electronica? - 2006/06/03 23:39Cos its wicked :-D I can`t be arsed to exaplin why i like techno cos it probly wudn`t make sense and i`d end up writing for ages. Incidentally...i`m a funky techno producer and i sampled that techno dis from eminem (`nobody listens to techno`) on my latest tune heheh. Search for `Sivey - Ironic` on audiogalaxy if u wanna find it
Re:Why we listen to electronica? - 2006/06/04 07:56can take me on a euphoric voyage of discovery. Or it can dark and deep that touches the soul. A song without words often touches me in a far more deep fashion than anything spoken or sung. I guess it is because I feel that I have to live life, not be told how to live it by what others have experienced.
Re:Why we listen to electronica? - 2006/06/04 18:08i listen to electronic music, because like any other music that i listen to, i enjoy it. though, lately i`ve been listening to quite a bit of other types of music, rather than electronic. except for hardcore. i still listen to that quite a bit. i listen to it when i`m stressed out, when i`m in a bad mood, when i`m in a good mood.. pretty much at any time. but, there is also quite a bit of other music that i really enjoy now as well.
Re:Why we listen to electronica? - 2006/06/05 01:29his chosen instrument over and beyond what we mere mortals consider to be `human`, a good producer can, with a little time and effort, do the same with *every* sound-byte, sample, drum pattern, et al that he can get his hands on, at the same time pushing the boundaries further and further away from what even the most talented human hands could ever achieve. In the end, it is only his creativity that dictates the boundaries. I love to hear new sounds. I love hearing old sounds twisted and mangled into something novel. And I love to hear disparate and disjointed sounds, not enough in themselves to elicit any kind of meaningful response but in their cohesion and convergence at the wave of the artist`s (now-proverbial) conductor`s wand take on a new, common purpose, to single-mindedly convey that thought, that emotion that ran through the artist`s psyche as he toiled over his endevour, with such coherence and clarity that I have cannot question it, nor analyse or quantify. All I can do is listen. And feel. And understand. Can you tell I haven`t had much sleep for the last week or so?
Re:Why we listen to electronica? - 2006/06/05 11:51Anti-techno? thumbs up! This is what keeps the music pure. Let the masses listen to the derivatives. You only have to look at the trends and should be happy when the quality artistic stuff remains underground. Hmm, its like if you listen to this sudden boom of hard-trance style music thats so frequently in the charts, "wasp`s in a jar" ppl call it. Its a derivative of old techno made cheesy; all the elements. But the techno community has moved. I`m comparing tracks like "age of love" by "jam & spoon" released years ago sounds like stuff coming out in that sheepish genre now. The same thing is happing in this recent expolosion for "electro-pop". The masses take years to catch up and transform the quality stuff into cheesy "acceptable" music. To continue with out too much critism, I listen to electronic becuase its mood music, from jumping around to some real ritualistic tribal techno to stuff like monolake, pure soundscapes. I love it and can listne and listen.... who could listen to chart stuff more than twice. Commercial music is for those who fear the depth that this music offers, usually inexperienced ppl. Commercial music has a place and gladly electronica settles in a different, more refined, intelligent and creative place)
Re:Why we listen to electronica? - 2006/06/05 21:33music made within the last 5 yrs. I would compare techno to the fine orcistratial sounds of something like bethoven, bach, wagner, or the like. The composers of now are using there "insturments" by using samples and drum machines and computer technology to do the same thing. A well done electronic/techno song of now. can have even more depth than one of the "Masters" classical works. yes as some of the people who dislike techno music don`t like it because it is too repetitive. Arn`t listening to good techno most of the time. in your head. lets say you have the high hat track, bass track, and an other insturmental track, I like to jump/fade between these "sounds" and mix what sounds I want to hear. I usally don`t listen to techno/electronic passivily It almost should be studied not just listened to. Although I am also able to just listen to it in the background but I often times have trouble just having a new piece of work (to me) playing in the back ground (kinda like now I`m being distracted by Dave Ralph - natrualized- disc 1) because I`ve never heard it before. but the way the sounds are mixed together are simmilar to what a conductor does with his orchestra. This is also kind of how i listen to the music because the other insturments almost never really go away like they do when an orchistra is playing. so in a nutshell I would say I listen to techno music because of it`s depth. there is some substance to good techno music to sink my ears into unlike 95% of the music being spoon fed to us by the large record companies. I will say I listen to everything and yes Emenims new song I do like. I also like classical, jazz, blues, and yea i think right now in my car cd player is some KMFDM and in the visor cd holder i think i even have some Bon-Jovi Crossroads. ok my 2 cents tlivingd
Re:Why we listen to electronica? - 2006/06/06 04:15even though i am 14, i really love techno. its diffrent than any other kind of music i know. the beats are continous and smooth, unlike rap with its broken up beats. also, techno has a lot less vilence (i cant spell) and cussing in it. people think rap and hip-hop are so great then why aint it played in clubs and raves?? if it is played in clubs, then they need to outlaw it.
Re:Why we listen to electronica? - 2006/06/06 04:56How does the concept of banning Hip-Hop and Rap fit with the concept of Peace, Love, Unity, Respect?
Re:Why we listen to electronica? - 2006/06/06 05:27Heh, heh... uhm... no. I agree. The relationship that rave culture has had with hip-hop culture has always seemed to be one of "good neighborliness". As in, while our houses are separate, we do invite one another over to our parties. Besides, so many staples (from equipment, like Tech-12s and MPCs, to fashion) seem to ignore any borders we might impose between the two. Let`s face it. The rap you hear on the radio and see on television is just as polluted as the "techno" you receive from the same places. Underground hip-hop is, for the most part, just as positive and non-violent as electronic music-- Hell, what am I saying? Hip-hop *IS* electronic music. It`s just electronic music with people spitting lyrics over it. Right? I mean, classify Reprazent... Classify Missy Elliot... Classify Kool Keith...
Re:Why we listen to electronica? - 2006/06/06 23:48ah yes, good ol` genre bashing. haven`t see that one in awhile around here. and complete with cross posting! got all your bases covered.
