scene meet & greets - 2006/06/02 12:51
I was just wondering, do you guys have some kind of place or event where you are, where you can go specifically to meet up and talk to your fellow ravers and get to know them as people, rather than, for instance, `that chick who dresses as a bumblebee` or `that guy who always wears a green bandana`? As much as I love raves, they sometimes don`t quite cut it as a social forum, what with all the noise and everyone kinda focused on partying - it`s all a little too hectic to really just sit down with someone and talk.
Where I`m at we have a clubnight that runs roughly every month (depending on when the `proper` raves are) held in a dingy old bar where no-one else would go otherwise, but centrally located so it`s pretty easy to get to from anywhere. There`s a small dancefloor (fits 100-odd people normally, and only half of that when rave music`s being played), but the main attraction is a lot of comfy seating in an adjoining but reasonably insulated room where everyone can sit and talk. You wanna say hi to that girl you always see at raves but never had a chance to meet? She`s over there on that table. You wanna tell a promoter how much you like his parties? That`s him slotting money into that poker machine.
I was reflecting last night (while two of my friends light-heartedly berated an DJ for "destroying" their favourite track at the last rave) that it was nights like this that make the scene special for me. Stories are told, wisdom is shared, bulls*** is passed back and forth, and come the next rave, the scariness of all the strange faces is replaced by the warmth of so many familiar smiles. Even at the bigger parties, we don`t lose the familiarity and openness that were forged over a few schooners of beer on this clubnight (kinda like in Cheers, where everybody knows your name =P). Without it, I probably would`ve stopped raving a long time ago. >

Re:scene meet & greets - 2006/06/02 14:30 We had something like that around here for a while. It was called "Zeroform" and it was actually just at a coffeeshop. Thursday nights, somebody would bring in some decks (either tables or CDs) and play some nice cutting edge stuff--like Japanese ambient IDM--while people chatted.
As it got bigger, other people at the coffeeshop started to complain about the music and it got shut down*.
Last spring, I started a replacement of sorts, where people could get together and have some electronic music related discussions. We talked about all sorts of things, from sequencing techniques to maintaining integrity in a capitalized subculture. It was very interesting, but much more directed than just people hanging out.
We`ll probably start it up again this fall, when the college kids come back. Anyone`s welcome to join (if you know where Caf? Vienna in West Lafayette, Indiana is...), just email me or whatever.
Keep shinin`, Stan
* even though we had specific permission from one of the managers: a long and frustrating discussion ensued...

Re:scene meet & greets - 2006/06/02 17:31 We used to do that at a cyber cafe in baltimore. There were lots of chairs and couches for people to sit and talk and an area for a dj to play.. he played intelligent dnb, which was nice in that setting. It was a nice way to meet new people and hang out with friends.
