Techno is Not Evil - 2006/05/27 17:40 So, I`ve been reflecting on what I learned at DEMF quite a bit lately. Perhaps the biggest lesson that has come to me is that, despite what I`ve been taught by people around here, techno is not evil.
See, in the midwest, it seems that techno is what people turn to in order to get away from house, trance, happycore... Which all have kiddy or silly stigmas attached to them. Many approach techno because its darker, more aggressive, more serious, etc.
Somewhere along the line, wires have been crossed and people have been touting techno as evil. As in, techno is the music you play when you`re ripping the wings off angels. Or, techno producers drench their gear in virgin blood before they write tracks, to bring out the character.
However, as I realized in Detroit, techno is NOT evil. In fact, it can be fun, happy, and even a bit soothing. Now, this will no doubt perturb the techno purists in my hometown, but I think that techno is--at its base--just party music. There`s no diabolic spirit that surrounds it and supplies it with dark energy. In fact, though it`s gotten a great deal more corrupt than it`s original incarnation, the spirit of optimism still lurks somewhere deep inside.*
"They say there is no hope. They say no UFOs. But keep your head held high, Maybe you`ll see them fly."
Keep shinin`, Stan
* This brings to mind blond-haired Anny Skywalker deep within the black suit of Darth Vader. Do not forget that his son believed in him and turned him back to the light. Perhaps this is possible with techno.

Re:Techno is Not Evil - 2006/05/28 08:42 Did someone once tell you techno was dark?
The first things I heard that were techno were things like Strings Of Life, Smokebelch 2, Acperience, Hi-Tec Jazz.
Long before I ever heard any nasty techno (which I love too).
Techno IS party music - you`re right.

Re:Techno is Not Evil - 2006/05/28 15:32 childish simple and bubblegum... you really should hear older infected mushroom, hallucinogen, juno reactor, astral projection, space cat, shakta..psy trance can be many things a trip to india, vampires, insects, aliens an elves workshop...in other words its visual..most progressive trance i hear is so reduced to the constraints of a popular "song" that all the conceptualization that gave it the name "progressive" has been sucked dry.. so yeah i went on the trance has gone to shit trip awhile back but i found this darker deeper music coming from israel, japan, india...at times spiritual, other times sinister..its a pendulum of emotion when you listen to any of this... a lot of detroit techno is interesting... you might appreciate richard james analogue bubblebaths or his polygon and caustic window cds..

Re:Techno is Not Evil - 2006/05/28 21:41 music..its like hendrix, floyd, zeppelin, black sabbath..so yeah its a really versatile genre of music gabber is like the cheesey thrash punk rock..( its music if you think music is an advertisement for ones ego.....) so in other words theyre both hard but one requires talent to produce...and then the other doesnt really (but ive seen some good hardcore djs) as far as good visual noise music that really can kick gabbers ass aphex twin and squarepusher definitely can balance the beauty with the ugliness...

Re:Techno is Not Evil - 2006/05/29 02:10 Oh, I`m well acquainted with Goa/Psytrance. In fact, you just named several of my favorite artists. On those rare occasions that I spin someplace (instead of lugging all of my stuff around), that`s what I bring in my crate. I never forget my Infected Mushroom!
You right about Goa taking some serious talent to produce though. I`ve been trying for quite some time to get the hang of it. The "structure" still eludes me. I know that there`s something there, but it`s so far detached from my world perspective... Perhaps I`m too analytical for Goa.
At any rate, yes I love that kind of music--which is why I buy the records instead.
Also, I wasn`t trying to say that Trance, House, and Happycore *are* a bunch of kiddy genres. I`m just saying that, around the midwest at least, they`re kind of seen as such. Techno and Jungle are the "king and queen". Personally, I love everything. There are Techno days and there are House days, just like there are bagel days and there are donut days.
