halcyon pres. Record Store Day Block party 4/19 w/ - 2008/04/14 23:39

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
halcyon the shop, BBE and Wax Poetics celebrate “Record Store Day,” a nationwide event, with a FREE block party, Saturday, April 19th 1-7pm in the Pearl Street Triangle, with Amir of Kon & Amir, DJ Too Tuff of Tuff Crew and halcyon’s own A. Frog
On April 19th, halcyon the shop will join hundreds of independently owned music stores across the country in celebrating the first ever, “Record Store Day.” Organized cooperatively by various industry associations, the nationwide effort aims to spotlight the essential role indie purveyors play in advancing music culture in America. To mark the day, participating shops will be mounting a wide variety of sales, in-store performances and special events, and generally putting on display everything that makes them unique and valuable assets in their local communities.
For it’s part, halcyon, being one of the only participating shops that specializes in DJ-oriented vinyl, will be taking Record Store Day back to the old school with a FREE Brooklyn-style block party. From 1-7pm, the recently re-purposed parking lot-cum-palazzo adjacent to the shop, (know locally as “The Pearl St. Triangle,”) will be the scene of a 100% vinyl-fueled throw down starring two serious titans of the DJ world. The party will be the spring kick-off for the new public plaza, the first of many neighborhood-driven events to grace the space in the warm months to come.
First up on the wheels of steel is Amir, one half of the famed crate digging DJ tandem, Kon & Amir. Gods amongst mere mortal record collectors, Kon & Amir first ascended to underground stardom through the release of their “On Track” series, a hotly tipped string of bootleg mixes featuring the hard to find vinyl gems that set their DJ sound apart. Nowadays the duo are too legit to quit, having found a home for their fully licensed “Off Track” mixes on Dumbo-based bbe records, who will release Volume 2 of the series on June 24th. When not behind the decks, Amir runs a new label recently launched by another Dumbo neighbor of halcyon’s, Wax Poetics, the journal of record for record nerds.
Following up Amir’s set will be a very rare appearance by a true legend, DJ Too Tuff of the original Philly hip-hop super group Tuff Crew. Long before The Roots made it OK to be a Playa in the City of Brotherly Love, Tuff Crew were representing hard for the illadeph, releasing 4 full length albums and appearing live alongside Public Enemy, Run-DMC, Biz Markie, Big Daddy Kane, Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock, LL Cool J, and many others. For his part, DJ Too Tuff aka Deuce Ace Detonator, is most often credited as a pioneer of various scratch techniques that served as the inspiration for the “Turntablism” practiced today by the likes of Z-Trip and DJ Shadow. With the pending Traffic Entertainment release of a Tuff Crew rarities collection and a full crew reunion show on the near horizon, hip-hoppers of today should take note that DJ Too Tuff is out of retirement and ready to school the uninitiated.
Rounding out the line-up is halcyon’s own resident vinyl horder, the “Amphibian Elvis” himself, A. Frog. As host of halcyon’s “Frog’s Treats” podcast on eastvillageradio.com, A. Frog broadcasts a weekly two hour program comprised of choice DJ Sets culled from live recordings made at the shop and his personal picks straight from the bins.
It’ll be hot on the block at Record Store Day, but inside the shop, the real heat will be on with fire sale discounts on crates and crates of wax pulled from halcyon’s vinyl vaults.

halcyon the shop is a dynamic concept space in Dumbo, Brooklyn's über-hot waterfront destination district. "the shop" offers a world class dj-oriented music store, design boutique and gallery, with roots deep in the talent-rich local community it serves; both as a social networking hub, creative resource and showcase. Nestled on a corner facing the majestic Manhattan Bridge anchorage, the shop's unique interior makes an immediate impression with it's 14' vaulted brick ceilings and playful "outside-in" design, a mixture of faux grass and bark treatments, edge lit green acrylic accents, custom fixtures of re-purposed heart pine and pools of loose river rocks on the floor.
Dedicated to supporting the underground music, art and fashion that shapes our urban experience, the shop offers an obsessively curated selection of underground, imported and independently released music, focusing on DJ-friendly new and used vinyl, as well as CDs and DVDs. A friendly, knowledgeable staff, and an open listening policy combine to defy the stereotype of the DJ store as an intimidating place, instead encouraging customers to explore the unfamiliar and expand their musical boundaries. On the design side, the shop features a constantly changing array of hand screened T-shirts and fashion accessories, art and design books, periodicals and self published 'zines, posters and prints. A gallery space mounts monthly shows spotlighting local, national and international talent in the graf and street art realm.
