This Weekend at Sankeys - Kaluki and Hacienda! - 2009/12/01 19:57 This weekend at Sankeys - Hacienda and Kaluki!

HACIENDA

It's time to pay some dues and come experience the original superclub,
Manchester's Hacienda, taking place at the city's new powerhouse, Sankeys.
The work of Factory Records and New Order in establishing the club at the
forefront of the international club scene represents one of the great
success stories of British music, and instrumental in the shaping of global
dance music. Sankeys repay this debt with another huge Hacienda Classics
party to rightly remember and celebrate the greatest period of dance music
ever.
Topping this bill is house music's original doyen, Marshall Jefferson. In
1986 Marshall broke into international stardom by urging the world to 'Move
your body'... the planet did just that. Jacking to Marshall's beat, the
world quickly took notice of the funk that could be tapped from drum
machines and house took over the globe. Marshall became an international
superstar and the rest quickly became legend.
One man who recognised Marshall's manoeuvres quicker than most was Graeme
Park, the original resident alongside Mike Pickering at the Hac. These two,
more than any other DJ, helped establish acid house as the sound of choice
in the British club scene, paving the way for everything that has followed
since. Still recognised as an international player and tastemaker, Graeme
represents the cutting edge of Mancunia in the 80s like no-one else, and
remains the most prominent icon of the sound of the Hacienda.
Further support comes in the shape of two of the other star DJs of the time
Tom Wainwirght and Jon da Silva, whose relevance still endures with regular
appearances at Fabric.

KALUKI

Kaluki come correct on the first weekend of December with a glorious
all-nighter at Sankeys guaranteed to instil some warmth to anyone feeling
the winter snap a little too much. Heading furlong into the early hours of
the morning with a hedonist slant needs guidance from some seriously
talented hosts, and Kaluki have invited two of the best to join their
resident ensemble, French titan Julian Chaptal and Hedi.
For a country that has a pretty strong track record on producing dance
music, it's oddly surprising that one of its latest stars has been making
waves from his ex-pat residence in Amsterdam rather than within the Franco
nation. Chaptal has been part of the gloriously resurgent house renaissance
emanating from the country more commonly associated with fluro trance and
driving techno beats than hip shaking beats and rolling grooves.
Alongside messrs 2000 and One, Kabale und Liebe, Shinedoe and Bart Skils,
Chaptal's dreamily melodic house has been at the forefront of the movement,
adding an otherworldly vibe to the proceedings. Making his Sankeys debut, he
promises to bring a brilliantly panoramic slant on house music to the club.
Joining him will be none other than Heidi, the Phonica goddess who is
quickly becoming one of the most talked about DJs on the planet. Her
effortless command of the groove has seen her stock raise at an equidistant
rate over the past few years, her sets a glorious brew of body-popping
techno and rump-shaking house that never strays anywhere near formulaic.
After stealing the show at Exit, she remains one of the leaders of the new
school on the electronic tip.
Kaluki front man Ellesse is also on show with his inspired take on
electronica.
