SANKEYS this: Sat Roger Sanchez Sun Steve Lawler! Saturday 26th – Boxing Day – Roger Sanchez
The lineups keep coming thick and fast, and there’s barely time to digest the Xmas turkey and festive brandied cream before something rather special – a belated birthday present if you will – is unwrapped at Sankeys on Boxing Day. He has already made one seismic appearance as the legendary club earlier in the summer and is back with aplomb to round up the Xmas cavalry with a 3-hour special set encompassing the finest house, the most twisted electro and a smattering of Roger Sanchez’s own esteemed productions. A true legend, gent and long-serving disciple of dance music in general, Sanchez cuts his own inimitable style which many seek to follow, yes few can even come to. For this Boxing Day treat, expect a true master class…The S-Man is an institution in dance music. During the nineties he was house music, cutting up rhythm tracks alongside acapellas and straight up single edits, layering drums and effects over his beats to sound completely alien to everything and everyone else out there. All the top house hits of the era, whether Kenny Dope’s horn led ‘The Bomb’ or Armand van Helden’s hip-hop infused beats, were made by a Roger Sanchez set. And his own productions, notably the chart smashing ‘Another Chance’, ensured his own imprint never left the consciousness of the dancefloor.
This century his input is equally as epochal. Now a key component of Amnesia’s Ibiza parties as well as in his own native NYC, his world famous Release Yourself parties have moved home this season, dovetailing with Armada’s trance led abandon at the legendary White Isle club every Tuesday. And he’s regularly taking his electro charged sound around the globe, rocking each and every corner of the planet with his rampant funk and erstwhile grooves. Don’t miss this opportunity of catching a true legend up close and personal.
Sankeys’ number main man on the decks – Greg Vickers – is also on duty for what promises to be one of the biggest house sessions of the club’s calendar, of the whole year!
Sunday 27th – Bank Holiday Xmas Party – Disco Electronica present s Steve Lawler Xmas is on a Friday this year. Which means the usual day for kick-starting the weekend has selfishly been robbed for getting drunk with your parents, scoffing too much food and deliberately ignoring the Queen’s speech. It’s not massively acid house – more stuck in your folk’s house. But it does shift the bank holiday to the 28th December, meaning Sunday 27th just took on a whole new dimension - another night on top of the Boxing Day action to help eradicate those-post Xmas blues. Sankeys recognise this and have ensured that if there’s any vestiges of turkey overload in your system, they will get purge you of them. Disco Electronica are at the helm of this calorie burn and one man is joining them for a four hour set, the peerless Steve Lawler. If one guest sums up the Tribal Sessions and Sankeys heritage, it’s the master of drums Steve Lawler. With an effusive command of percussion, Lawler has always been the perfect foil for the Manchester powerhouse, bringing a dark hedonism to the dancefloor at each and every appearance. Attaining a mesmerising ability to shape the mood and atmosphere with devastating ease, Steve Lawler is the one the locals, not the dance music press or the wide eyed holiday maker, acclaim as the King of Space at the Ibizan superclub. Convincing the diehard that go every week is one thing when it’s your local emporium, but at the world’s finest nighterie it really represents something of a glorious achievement, and when added to the international acclaim and renown Lawler has in bucket loads it adds to his reputation as a truly evocative DJ. Support comes in the Disco Electronica chiefs OD Muzique.
