Samuel L Session Interview:
K - How did you get into Techno? SLS - I was into Kraftwork in the 80's and got into the house thing. Back then I was very open minded so I embraced techno when i started to appear in record shops in the early 90's
K - You have been DJ'ing for a long time; tell us about your first gig. SLS - It was quite horrible actually! It was in 1992 at a club in Gothenburg and I was really nervous, but it went ok in the end I think.
K - What’s the Techno scene like in Sweden at the minute? SLS - We have this club called The Eye which runs every Friday at an old Jazz club which is the most regular techno event in Gothenburg. Stockholm has more Techno nights but it is not as big at the scenes in London or Berlin at the minute.
K - What’s your favourite place you have ever played at? SLS - Columbia. There is such an intense feeling there, they are crazy!
K - We have just come from Fabric where you played live, how did it go? SLS - I was nervous before I went on but it went well, everybody was dancing so I'm happy!
K - Do you prefer Dj'ing or Producing? SLS - It's a tough question, if I were free in the week and was able to play at the weekends, I would choose DJ'ing but I really love being in the studio. The trouble is being in the studio consumes so much time so I would probably choose Dj'ing.
K - You said you played vinyl records for 21 years, how hard was it to move over to digital performing? SLS - It was extremely hard because I was playing vinyl records for so long, I can have fun with Traktor though because it enables me to mix really fast, that's why I bought it.
K - Which DJ's or Producers are you into at the minute? SLS - I tend to like all the classics - Derrick May, Jeff Mills etc. None of the new guys have really blown me away lately though.
K - Out of all the tracks you have produced, which are you most proud of? SLS - Probably Velvet and Merengue
K - Do you have any regrets? SLS - Sometimes I regret my New Soul 002 release, but then I lie on my sofa and listen to it on Juno and it actually sounds good!
K - With the recent success of 'Can you Relate', did you expect it to be as big as it got? SLS - Well I made this bassline after a couple of days of not making anything good in the studio and I felt this was something special. Then Paris from Detroit Grand Pubahs emailed me and said he liked my music. He sent me a loop of his vocals which fitted into the tune nicely. I then felt this could be huge, and it was!
K - How did you approach making your latest album? SLS - At first I didn’t know how to approach it but then I felt I wanted to go back 10 years and make that sound more modern. Shlomi Aber asked me to do it, without him it wouldn’t have happened.
K - What other music do you listen to? SLS - Kraftwerk, Depeche mode (my favourite band), lots of Hip Hop, Jazz, Funk, Rock etc.
K - If you weren't a DJ/Producer what would you be right now? SLS - I would probably be a homeless painter! I went to college to study art when I was 17, although I got bored of it.
K - What do you do to relax? SLS - I love watching movies
K - Have you ever Googled Yourself? SLS - Yes many times! The result is generally good but the other day I did it and a picture of Hitler came up! I don’t know why!
K - Any plans for 2010 SLS - To Dj more and release as many records as possible
