Jef K Interview exclusive ahead of Liaison 5/3 - 2011/03/01 19:25
March is a busy time for all the major DJ's, Labels and agencies of our world, as it is the Winter Music Conference in Miami, where anyone that is anyone will be there. Pushing their sound, party or DJ. Liaison will be doing exactly the same for those of you that are heading across the Atlantic to Miami and for anyone that can’t make it, right here in London as a WMC send off.
This time round Liaison welcome Jef K to the decks, Parisian Jef K cut his DJ teeth in 1992. Since that time he has held residencies at Paris’ Rex Club and Open House, Fuse in Brussels, and Frankfurt’s Robert Johnson. As well as Silver Network, he is also a partner in the label Crack & Speed. His tune made with Chris Carrier and Chez Damier also known as The Gathering. "In My System" was voted number 7 in the top 50 Resident Advisor charts for 2010, this being the most credible chart in the music industry. It was also voted number 19 in the mixmag chart and this covers all music genres! 2011 is going to be a huge year for Jef, and Liaison welcome him to Pacha London.

Your most recent success has been with The Gathering – a group that includes yourself, Chris Carrier and Chez Damier. How did the collaboration come about?
I've known chez damier for a long time, he used to live in paris a while ago and i've always loved his amazing productions, and chris & i have been working together for a long time so it was obvious for us to bring him in chris studio and work on something. he did a beautiful vocal, we did an original song together and after that i did a remix myself with a great help of chris … et voila !!
Were you surprised by the success of ‘In My System’? It’s been a huge record for Techno DJ’s like Ricardo Villalobos, but also an important record for many house DJ’s.
I was a bit surprised i have to say, actually a couple of monthes after we did this track i met old mates ricardo & zip in the plane from mallorca to paris and gave them the tune, they played it the week end after at fabric / london and the week end after at time warp festival in germany and then everybody was looking for it !! i am indeed very happy that it was an important track last year during summer ….
Are there any plans for more material from The Gathering?
Hopefully there will be as chez will be back in paris next month we will see …
Much of your work contains disco samples, when did you first discover that kind of music?
I've always liked disco and funk music as i like hip hop and reggae, all kind of music that contains big basslines …. this is the sexy sound that moves me and house music is naturally the following of that previous feeling …
Is it a struggle finding new tracks to sample? Many of the tracks you’ve used are relatively obscure. (I’m thinking of tracks like Silver Connection’s ‘Fly Robin Fly’ and Cela’s ‘I’m In Love’ which was used by Chris Carrier)
Its not really a struggle as we live with those songs for so many years, they are definitely part of our life … to us they are not so obscure ….
The output on your label, Silver Network, is quite varied. What characteristics make a Silver Network track?
There is no strict characteristic, i would say, groovy, sexy and a bit of cleverness makes it right …
Moving on to your DJ’ing, what can we expect from your set at Pacha?
I am very looking forward to that gig !! expect some party tunes with loads of bass and vocals coming from all over the world ...
Do you have records that never leave your bag?
I always have a chez damier track in my bag 
What do you make of the London club scene? Is it much different to that of Paris?
Actually it is, the sound system is almost always perfect which is not unfortunately the case over here, and the crowd is usually much more up for it than here … still there are a few very good parties in Paris sometimes don't get me wrong
You’ve worked with and collaborated with countless talent acts – Dixon, Herbert, Iz & Diz to name only a few – who have been the most inspiring?
This is hard to say they all have something really special that makes them one out of a million and there's a lot of respect from me ... its a bit pointless to choose one of them … i feel blessed to have spend a little time with those amazing artists and i hope to keep on doing it and get inspiration from them …
And finally, what’s the one thing in life you could not live without?
This one is very easy it stands in 5 letters, it starts with a big L and finishes with a big E (guess the other letters) …. see you at Pacha !!
