THE END PRESENTS ‘SHAKE IT’ STAGE
New to South West Four this year is The End presents ‘Shake It’ stage. The End was a symbol of London’s clubland, at the very fore-front of every major movement and purveyor of all things electronic and groovy. Sadly the world said goodbye to The End in January 2009 when the club shut, but the spirit and passion lives on with its owner Layo Paskin, who launched his new warehouse concept ‘Shake It’ in March. Layo & Bushwacka! are the first names to be announced in The End presents ‘Shake It’ stage with some seriously huge headline guests and support DJs to be announced very soon. “I was blown away by SW4” says Layo, referring to his debut set at last summer’s South West Four festival. “We had an early afternoon set and I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it was packed and had a great crowd and atmosphere. It was a highlight of my summer”. Read the full interview with Layo below.
THE GALLERY STAGE
Quite simply London’s leading weekly club, The Gallery returns to South West Four this summer to host its very own stage for the 4th year running. Establishing its reputation for ‘Excellence in the Art of Sound’ each and every Friday night at the legendary Turnmills for 13 years, The Gallery’s move to Ministry of Sound in April 2008 was greeted with open arms by DJs and clubbers alike. The famous south London club was the natural new home for The Gallery and week in, week out, they continue to amaze with some of the biggest line-ups on the planet! The Gallery’s SW4 line-up will be announced at The Gallery’s 14th Birthday on Friday 24th April at Ministry of Sound where Armin van Buuren is amongst the headliners. You know from previous years that The Gallery has ALWAYS delivered the goods in this department, and we can confirm there are some MASSIVE names on the bill for this year!
GLOBAL UNDERGROUND STAGE
Debuting at South West Four in 2009 will be world renowned dance label Global Underground. The GU imprint is arguably dance music’s most established and iconic record label and has been synonymous with the world’s leading electronic artists since 1996! As such, Global Underground’s SW4 stage will feature an array of globe-trotting headliners alongside newer breakthrough talent from their current roster. “GU is happy to be bringing its sound to SW4” says the label’s main man Andy Horsfield. “It’s been a while since I found a festival good enough for us to want to be involved. Global Underground is proud to be hosting a stage this year at South West Four.”
Look out for a special appearance from GU master Danny Howells, who’s completed a hat-trick of releases on the label... ‘GU 27: Miami’, ‘GU Nu Breed’ and ‘GU 247’. Danny is also a seasoned veteran of South West Four, as is Nic Fanciulli who’ll be racking up his 4th appearance at SW4 this summer. Nic’s debut GU compilation is released at the end of April. Next up is Nick Warren, a GU man through and through. Nick has released more compilations than any other artist, as ‘Lima 35: Nick Warren’ became his 8th release in total! SW4 debutant James Lavelle is bringing up the rear with his 3rd mix set to drop later this year, plus there’s another debut on the day from the latest Nu Breed mixmaster Jim Rivers. Meanwhile, future superstar Anil Chawla makes his second SW4 appearance on the spin, following the highly acclaimed release of his debut album ‘Roadhouse’ (with partner Dale Anderson) on GU in February. And yet there’s more... look out for one final very special guest to be announced real soon. Mmmm?

EXCLUSIVE LAYO PASKIN INTERVIEW
Firstly, I think we speak on behalf of everyone in clubland in congratulating you on everything you achieved at The End and given to London. How hard a decision was it to call it a day? Thank you. It was hard because we were all so emotionally involved and it had been our lives for a long time, but deep down we knew that the timing was good and the opportunity to have a full story and walk away on our terms was a special one. We didn’t feel there was more we could do but continue and we didn’t want to lose the passion that made it the place we all loved.
How has the closing of The End changed your life on a day to day basis now that the dust has settled? What do you miss the most? Yes but I haven’t had as much time off as I thought I would! But that is down to me, I’ve been in the studio a lot, we organised shake it but I am beginning to enjoy the freedom. I miss working with the team there; we had a real family vibe.
Did you take any cool memorabilia from the club?! Yes lots. But the best bit is a piece of the original flooring with the dates of the club’s history inscribed; it looks good in my home studio.
New for 2009 is ‘Shake It’, your new warehouse concept. How did the launch party go with Laurent Garnier? Fantastic, but it was a lot of work with just a few of us and not the whole end team…
Was it weird hosting a party away from The End? Yes definitely, for the first hour all I could think was this wasn’t The End but then I relaxed and the party took on its own identity and it was fantastic, reminded me of when I started in all the good ways.
You made your debut at the South West Four festival last summer on the Main Stage, how was that for you? Awesome. I was blown away by SW4. We had an early afternoon set and I wasn’t sure what to expect but it was packed and had a great crowd and atmosphere. It was a highlight of my summer.
This year we’re privileged to have you guys hosting one of the arenas. Tell us more... Well Danny [from SW4] approached us and it was great to be asked because London is our home. SW4 is already an amazing event and we are doing new parties in the form of “Shake It” so the combination felt perfect. We’re really looking forward to it.
What’s the best thing about outdoor festivals in the summer and do you have any essential festival survival tips? Well of course it is weather dependent, but somehow that weekend always is pretty good, partying outside is the ultimate and of course we aren’t spoilt in England with sun so I think we all really embrace each opportunity. Festival tips? Enjoy the moment.
What’s your favourite festival drink? Nothing too unique, it’s not easy getting the perfect drink in a field but a cold beer always washes well.
What’s been your most shameful festival moment – be it on a social level or whilst performing... come on be honest...?! Honestly nothing I can remember, I have slept in the back of my car a few times which always seems like not too bad an idea till you wake up…
Now the weekends are totally yours again, will you be making up for some lost time with tours galore on the horizon? Yes but I have been on the road pretty much relentlessly for ten years, still I love to travel.
What’s next for Layo & Bushwacka in 2009? Production, DJ wise etc Studio, lots of it… remixes for artists from Fatboy Slim to labels such as Plus 8, pretty varied and lots of tracks for our label, Olmeto. And of course DJing somewhere near you this year.
